UvA wireless/eduroam manual and software

Introduction

Students and staff can access the following wireless networks:

  • uva
  • eduroam

The section below offers step-by-step instructions for accessing uva or eduroam.

For the manuals, scroll this page to below.

WindowsXP/ Windows Vista

SecureW2 client software will be made available for Windows systems.

Please note: You must have administrator rights for the laptop. If you are using Windows XP, you must have installed service pack 3 or higher in order to install UvA SecureW2 version (or service pack 2 + patch KB917021).

If you have not installed service pack 3 in Windows XP, you can download and install the required patch below:

  • WindowsXP-KB917021-v3-x86-NLD.exe (Dutch)
  • WindowsXP-KB917021-v3-x86-ENU.exe (English)

Please note: the configuration is intended for UvA users. Eduroam users must make several manual adjustments after installation is complete (see manual).

MAC OSX

MAC OSX users do not need to install the client software. No support is available for the configuration of Mac OSX.

More information you cab find on the UvAwiki Mobiele Toegang UvA.

PDA/Smart Phone

UvA wireless/eduroam is available for mobile phones (hereafter: PDA) with Microsoft PocketPC2003, Windows Mobile 6 or comparable software.

However, no support is available for PDA configuration or installation.

You can find the installation software and manual at the bottom of this page.

The SecureW2 Client will be installed on the PDA by means of ActiveSync (see the link below).

The UvA Eduroam CE (PDA) EN manual provides instructions for the installation and configuration of the SecureW2 client. The manual was written for HTC Touch Pro.

Linux

Linux hosts can use the 802.1x client wpa_supplicant to access UvA wireless/eduroam.

Please note: No support is available for the Linux platform. We welcome any comments and/or improvements regarding the instructions (draadloos-ic@uva.nl).

See the Linux manual below for instructions.

Other information

In some cases, the 802.1x clients software that is already installed on the system (which supports the required security protocol) can be used instead of SecureW2.

The standard software on various Wireless Ethernet Cards (such as INTEL PRO wireless) supports the required safety protocol. The table below features various specific configuration parameters for the UvA wireless service.

Supported protocols:

The section under the heading ‘Security' describes the proper procedure for loading the appropriate server certificate.

Attention: The IC advises you to update your wlan driver before installing SecureW2. That driver is often outdated and therefore not fit for use with SecureW2. It's also important to not use any wlan manager besides SecureW2.
